On the banks of the Avon River sits one of the Garden City’s most recognisable pieces of architecture and one of New Zealand’s premier performance venues. Within the grand setting of the Christchurch Town Hall royalty, heads of state and legendary artists have proclaimed and performed.
After taking a bit of a battering, restoration work is now well underway and on track for a June 2018 opening. This work includes strengthening to 100% of the new building standard, as well as a significant upgrade and overall refurbishment.
Soon the main Auditorium and James Hay Theatre will be hosting the big events once more. The acoustics of both theatres are considered to be amongst the best in the world, making them ideal for everything from conferences, seminars and gala dinners to rock concerts and classical music.
Along with the Limes Room, Conference Room and Samoan Room, group capacities will range from 20 up to 2200. Spacious breakout areas in the light and airy foyers and concourses, a restaurant and private dining room, espresso bar and casual bar areas will again provide the easy functionality and professional integrity required from a world-class venue.
You can see all the work for yourself. Two time-lapse cameras have been installed to provide a glimpse of the work underway. These cameras take a photo every fifteen minutes during the early stages of the project. As work progresses and the excitement and anticipation climbs closer to the completion date of June 2018 the images will be updated at shorter intervals.
